Local Art and Activity – Riverside Pottery

Today I visited Riverside Pottery where my daughter is taking the pottery class as a part of 4-H program. Susanna and Hans, the artists and owners of the store/studio, are the instructors.

Susanna explains why and how to smooth out the surface prior to glazing.

There are endless variations of the glaze mixture. Stir thoroughly before the application.

Quickly dip and coat.

After it’s dry, clean the bottom. If there is any glaze left, the pottery will be stuck in the kiln!

Use such a tool to glaze a flat piece.

pot 03
Painting the pottery with brush, pen, sponge, etc. Neat tools and techniques.

Ready for firing – the green will turn darker glossy blue green while the white/gray will be light blue!!

Lots of unique art pieces

It was interesting to hear how delicate the pottery making process is. The moisture content of the clay, the shrinkage after it dries, the mixing condition of the glaze, how it’s glazed and fired – they are never the same each time. You’ll never know how it turns out until you open the kiln… exciting, isn’t it?

A fun project for kids (big or small)!
